Pathway to Ireland for Pakistani Midwife
Pakistani-trained midwife is eligible to apply in Ireland as a license Midwife after following a process which is similar to the process to that of a nurse, as the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) regulates both professions. Here is a detailed guide:
Step 1: Ensure You Meet the Eligibility Criteria
Nursing Qualification: You must hold a recognized nursing qualification that is comparable to the standards in Ireland. The NMBI will assess your education and training.
Current Registration: You need to be currently registered or licensed as a nurse in Pakistan without any restrictions. You will need to provide a Certificate of Good Standing from the Pakistan Nursing Council.
Work Experience: While not always explicitly stated as a strict requirement, having some post-qualification nursing experience can be beneficial.
English Language Proficiency: You must demonstrate a high level of English language competence. The NMBI accepts scores from the following tests taken within the last two years:
IELTS Academic: Overall score of 7.0, with a minimum of 7.0 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and at least 6.5 in Writing.
OET (Occupational English Test) for Nurses: Minimum grade B in Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and at least C+ in Writing. The NMBI will verify your test results directly with the testing organization.
Step 2: NMBI Assessment
The NMBI will review your application and all the submitted documentation to assess if your qualifications and experience meet the standards required for registration in Ireland.
This assessment process can take several months.
The NMBI may request further information or clarification during the assessment.
Step 4: Outcome of Assessment and Potential Compensation Measures
The NMBI will send you a decision letter with one of the following outcomes:
Full Eligibility for Registration: You can proceed to apply for registration.
Partial Eligibility – Adaptation or Aptitude Test: If your qualifications have deficits compared to Irish standards, you may need to complete a compensation measure:
Adaptation Programme: A supervised clinical practice period in an Irish healthcare setting (typically 6-12 weeks).
Aptitude Test: An examination assessing your midwifery knowledge and skills. This test in Ireland is conducted by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and includes a theory (MCQ) and practical (OSCE) component.
Refusal of Registration: If your qualifications are significantly different, your application may be refused (with a right to appeal).
Step 5: Complete Compensation Measures (if required)
If an adaptation programme or aptitude test is required, the NMBI will provide details on how to proceed. You will be responsible for arranging and funding these.
Step 6: Apply for Registration
After successfully completing any required compensation measures, you can apply for registration as a midwife with the NMBI. This involves further documentation and a registration fee (currently €145 for the first year).
