Pathway To Australia For Pakistani Doctors
Pakistani Medical Graduates/Doctors are eligible to apply for a license in Australia, and provisional registration is available.
Here’s a breakdown:
Eligibility: Pakistani medical graduates are considered International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in Australia. To be eligible, they generally need a recognized primary medical qualification (like an MBBS) from a university listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS). They also need to demonstrate English language proficiency (e.g., through IELTS or OET).
Pathways to Registration: The most common pathway for Pakistani graduates is the Standard Pathway. This typically involves:
Primary Source Verification (PSV): Verifying their medical qualifications through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) via EPIC/MyIntealth.
Australian Medical Council (AMC) Examinations:
Passing both parts of the AMC exam: AMC CAT MCQ Exam: A computer-based multiple-choice exam.
AMC Clinical Exam or Workplace-based Assessment (WBA): A practical clinical exam or assessment of clinical skills in a supervised workplace setting.
Workplace-Based Assessment (WBA)
Alternative to Clinical Exam:
For IMGs on the Standard Pathway, the WBA is an alternative to the AMC Clinical Exam. You don’t do both. If you choose the WBA pathway, you pass the AMC CAT MCQ and then, once you secure a position with an AMC-accredited WBA provider and get limited/provisional registration, you undertake the WBA.
Provisional Registration: Once the AMC Certificate is obtained (after passing both exams), IMGs can apply for provisional registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
Provisional Registration: This type of registration is granted to IMGs who have successfully completed the AMC exams (Standard Pathway) or are eligible for the Competent Authority Pathway. It allows them to practice under supervision for a period, typically 12 months, before they can apply for general registration. During this period, they must complete supervised practice and meet reporting requirements.
Overall Average for Doctors: Ranges from around AUD $150,000 to AUD $300,000+, but this varies widely by specialization.
